Galaxy’s Bruce Arena, David Beckham, Omar Gonzalez up for top awards

The Galaxy’s Bruce Arena, David Beckman and Omar Gonzalez are among the finalists for three of Major League Soccer’s top postseason prizes, the MLS announced Monday.

Arena, who Sunday became the winnigest postseason coach in league history, is among three candidates for coach-of-the-year honors, midfielder Beckman is up for comeback player of the year and Gonzalez is among the nominees for defender of the year for the second season in a row.

Under Arena, the Galaxy finished with the best regular-season record in the MLS for the second consecutive year. After winning the Western Conference championship Sunday, the Galaxy will play in the MLS Cup final for the second time in three years. That game will be played Nov. 20 at the Home Depot Center.

Beckham finished second in the league with 15 regular-season assists in 26 games. A year ago, he played in only seven games and had only one assist. The winners for comeback player and coach of the year will be revealed Nov. 14.

Gonzalez has been a finalist for a major league award in each of this three MLS seasons. He was the rookie of the year in 2009 and was nominated twice for defender of the year. This year’s top defender will be announced Wednesday.

The three finalists for most valuable player in the league are Brad Davis of the Houston Dynamo, Dwayne De Rosario of DC United and Brek Shea of FC Dallas. The winner will be announced Nov. 18.
