Bears confirm Jay Cutler’s thumb is broken, turn to Caleb Hanie

The Chicago Bears have finally confirmed that quarterback Jay Cutler indeed has broken the thumb in his throwing hand, and that he was injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s victory over San Diego.
“I’m not going to play doctor right now,” Bears Coach Lovie Smith said Monday on WBBM-AM. “We are going through the process. We will be able to tell you a little bit more. It’s all we know right now.”
The Chicago Tribune has reported that Cutler will be sidelined six to eight weeks, and that surgery is a possibility.
So the Bears turn to the lightly experienced Caleb Hanie, who stepped in for Cutler in the fourth quarter of Chicago’s loss to Green Bay in last season’s NFC championship game.
Smith said he’ll be expecting the “same play from our quarterback position,” even though Cutler was having an outstanding year and makes throws most NFL quarterbacks can’t make.
“Caleb has played a lot for us around here,” Smith said. “We feel comfortable with him being our quarterback. It’s always next guy up. We’ve had other injuries at other positions. That’s what it will be.
“We’re a good football team, and we still plan on winning.”
