Wimbledon: French Open champ Li Na taken out early

Sabine Lisicki,
a 21-year-old from Germany who had been carried off the court at the French Open after collapsing with cramps and who needed a wild card to get into the Wimbledon main draw, upset third-seeded Li Na, 3-6, 6-4, 8-6.

Li had become the first Chinese woman to win one of the four major tennis tournaments when she took the French Open last month.

Lisicki missed five months of the 2010 season with an ankle injury that she said kept her on crutches for seven weeks, but she has always showed a firm grass-court game. In 2009, she made the Wimbledon quarterfinals and won a Wimbledon warm-up tournament at Birmingham two weeks ago.

‘My emotions are over the moon,’ she said.

Li twice served for the match but seemed tentative against Lisicki, who had fallen out of the top 200 in the rankings after her ankle injury. ‘It was very very hard,’ Lisicki said. ‘I had to start from zero after being on crutches for seven weeks. Getting the wild card here, I appreciate it so much.’

CHICAGO: ROSENWINKEL. “Edgar? Edgar Rosenwinkel?’’ the big ballplayer, dressed head to toe as a Philadelphia Phillie, asked the 85-year-old man seated in the front row of the Wrigley Field bleachers. “Are you the one who threw that ball back to Dizzy Dean?” This was indeed the hard-working, mild-mannered Edgar Rosenwinkel, a salt-of-the-earth type who looked on completely flabbergasted as his son and grandson watched Curt Schilling engage him in the conversation of a lifetime. “My dad’s jaw hit the ground,’’ Wayne Rosenwinkel recalled last week. “He was like, ‘Oh, my God, what’s happening?’ “ This not-so-random encounter happened at Wrigley Field in July, 2000, about a week before Schilling was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was one of those acts of kindness, done out of decency and respect, which happen every day but rarely captures anyone’s attention. ROGERS. w/family photos.
