Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward has been guest-blogging for The Times while he competes on ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ Ward, a Super Bowl MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion, answers a few questions from Fabulous Forum editor Houston Mitchell and gives some insight into the competition. Here are Ward’s thoughts (offered via email) about Week 10, when he and partner Kym Johnson were named the winners of the Season 12 competition.

1. You’ve already said that Kym is tough and a real warrior out there, but the freestyle requires lifts. Were you very concerned about how much she would be able to do in light of her condition?

At first I was. I knew that no matter what, Kym was gonna try to do all that she could to win for us, for me. But as we talked about the routine, I felt good. I don’t have any problems with my hands and I knew I could hold her up with lifts and not let her fall. I mean, I use my hands for a living. If you remember, when Kym got injured she was not in the air. She was already on the ground. So I felt OK with lifting her, ‘cause I had no plans to ever let her fall. And I felt good doing them with her.

2. Where are you going to keep your mirror ball trophy?

I have a place in my trophy case with my Super Bowl MVP trophy, right between my two Lombardis. It’s gonna look nice.

3. Compare winning the mirror ball trophy, an individual accomplishment, with winning the Super Bowl, a team accomplishment.

I don’t think you can really compare the two. They are equally important to me. They mean different things. Winning the Super Bowl symbolized being the best in my profession. It along with winning the Super Bowl MVP is the ultimate goal both individually and as a team. It says we are good at what we do as professionals. Winning the mirror ball trophy for me symbolizes overcoming my fear of the unknown. It says that I was able to excel at something I knew nothing about. I was able to rise above difficulty and take a risk. Both prove that hard work pays off. Both are special.

4. Other than Kym, what will you miss the most about this experience?

Definitely all the friends I made at the show. I will miss Kym for sure and I will miss all the fun we had, all of us celebs and pro dancers. Doing the show was amazing and I had a blast. I am glad I got the chance to do it and am grateful to my marketing team for getting me the opportunity and to DWTS for giving me the opportunity.

5. Hundreds of thousands of people have been reading your blog here. Any last words for them?

Yes. I want to thank them for all their support and for sticking with me and believing in me. I had never danced before and so this wasn’t easy for me. So thank you for all the love and for voting for Kym and me all these weeks. I love you guys.

Besides being a Super Bowl MVP, Hines Ward is the founder of the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation, which focuses on improving literacy among children and provides programs and services to better equip them for achieving and handling success in life.
