Play was suspended at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club because of darkness and with heavy rain falling.

Fred Couples, 51, completed his second round and was at eight-under-par 134 after shooting a five-under 66 on Friday. He had a two-stroke lead over first-round co-leaders J.B. Holmes, John Senden and Spencer Levin. Holmes double-bogeyed his final hole and finished with a 69 on Friday. Senden also shot 69, and Levin was on the course and will have three holes left in his second round when play resumes Saturday morning. Levin, from Sacramento, birdied the par-four 13th and pulled into the second-place tie.

There were six golfers three shots behind Couples, including another first-round leader, Aaron Baddeley, who had four holes left. He birdied the par-three 14th just before the horn blew, ending play.

Play is scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. Saturday, and the cut and third-round pairings won’t be set until the second round is complete. The weather forecast for Saturday is for plenty more rain.
