After 2 in Ottawa: Kings 2, Senators 2

The Kings actually scored a power-play goal in the second period, something of an event for them after being blanked on the power play in their previous two games and three of the previous four. But their lead was erased with 55.3 seconds left in the period, when Ottawa’s aggressive play led to the tying goal.

Senators defenseman Chris Phillips was sent off at 7:02 for interfering with Dustin Brown, and the Kings took advantage at 7:52 to take a 2-1 lead. Justin Williams’ shot from the top of the circle changed direction before reaching Pascal Leclaire, and Ryan Smyth was credited with the deflection.

The goal was Smyth’s seventh but only his first with the man advantage.

The Senators matched that in the final minute of the period. Veteran Daniel Alfredsson aggressively took the puck away from defenseman Jack Johnson in the Kings’ zone, spinning Johnson around like a top. Alfredsson got the puck to Milan Michalek, who scored off a scramble in front at 19:04.

Through two periods the Kings had a 19-15 edge in shots and had a power play that will carry over to the third period.
