If it’s July, it means Hall of Fame thoroughbred trainer Bob Baffert is starting to unveil his top 2-year-olds who could develop into Kentucky Derby contenders. On Sunday in the seventh race at Hollywood Park, Baffert unleashed a good one in Smash, a son of Smart Strike.

Smash won the five-furlong maiden race by 2 1/2 lengths in a time of 57.83 seconds. He broke second and drew away in the stretch when jockey Martin Garcia asked him to run. A year ago, Baffert had another 2-year-old son of Smart Strike make his debut, Lookin At Lucky, who went on to win the Preakness.Smash was purchased for $400,000 at a 2-year-olds in training sale in March.
