Luis Martinez Jr., a rookie driver from Long Beach in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, has been on a bit of bumpy road in the first half of the season.

Martinez is the top driver in the West Series rookie of the year standings at the midway point of the season. But he took over the car and team that won the West Series championship in 2009 with Jason Bowles as its driver.

Martinez has posted some impressive finishes. He was the top-finishing rookie, ninth-place overall, in the West Series race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on July 3.

But his team, the Sunrise Ford team owned by Bob Bruncati, is used to winning races and contending for championships.

Martinez said he is looking forward to the second half of the West Series season, especially the road courses. The second half of the West Series begins Sunday at Portland International Raceway in Oregon, one of two road courses remaining on the West Series schedule.
