Angels catcher Jeff Mathis, who sat out three games at Salt Lake over the weekend after taking a pitch off his right thumb Thursday night, resumed his rehab assignment Monday night and doubled and tripled in his first two at-bats.

Manager Mike Scioscia said Mathis will play at least two more games for Salt Lake and, barring further setback, would probably be activated for this weekend’s series against the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field. The return of Mathis will allow the Angels to move power-hitting catcher Mike Napoli to first base on a more permanent basis.

‘The more he plays over there, the more comfortable he’ll get,’ General Manager Tony Reagins said of Napoli. ‘He’s played first base in the past, and we will give him an opportunity to play more there.’
