Going into their fight at UFC 114, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson dismissed Rashad Evans as a fighter, labeling Evans beneath his level and questioning who Evans has fought and defeated. On Saturday night, Evans displayed to Jackson the skills that make him one of the best 205 pound fighters in the world.

Evans (15-1-1) implemented an intelligent and effective strategy against Jackson, using continual clinches and takedown attempts to tire Jackson and prevent Jackson from getting comfortable with his devastating striking. He then utilized his speed to avoid what offense Jackson was able to put forth.

Evans’ pressure and speed mostly negated Jackson’s offense and Evans was able to land enough punches throughout the fight to score a unanimous judges’ decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). Evans sent Jackson flying back early in the first round with a punch and opened up with ground and pound offense towards the end of the third round.

Jackson’s best flurry came early in the third round, when he staggered Evans with punches and appeared to have Evans in deep trouble. But Evans weathered the difficulty and closed out the fight strong. It was a satisfying victory over his rival, and Evans is now potentially in line for a light heavyweight title shot against Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua.
