A seven-run fifth inning propelled Stanford to an 8-4 Pacific 10 Conference victory over UCLA on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium, handing the Bruins their first defeat after they had started the season with 22 consecutive victories.

The Cardinal (13-8, 3-2) ripped the ball in the fifth inning against UCLA sophomore pitcher Trevor Bauer, who came in with a 12-0 record as a starting pitcher over the last two seasons. The inning started with an error by shortstop Niko Gallego, and then the Cardinal started to pound the ball, including a two-run double by Stephen Piscotty and an RBI triple by Tyler Gaffney.

Jordan Pries pitched a complete game for Stanford. UCLA (22-1, 1-1 in the Pac-10) got a two-run home run from Brett Krill in the ninth.

The schools conclude their three-game series Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
