Kentucky Derby fever is starting to break out, and Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby is another opportunity to see if there’s a local racing star on the horizon.

While Lookin At Lucky will be the heavy favorite -- and deservedly so because the horse was the champion 2-year-old last year -- my money is going on the talented Sidney’s Candy.

There are horse racing experts who still don’t have Sidney’s Candy in their top-10 lists for the Kentucky Derby because they haven’t been convinced the 3-year-old son of Candy Ride is anything more than a one-dimensional speed horse.

Come Saturday, watch the bandwagon effect if and when Sidney’s Candy wins the 1 1/8-mile Santa Anita Derby. Soon, ‘freak’ will be the most used word to describe Sidney’s Candy, the winner of stakes races in his last two outings at seven furlongs and 1 1/16 miles.

Of course, there’s always the chance Sidney’s Candy, who likes to go to the front, will be challenged early on. I say bring it on. This is a special horse in the making.
