Here’s something that will make Lane Kiffin‘s return to USC a little bit easier next season -- Stanford running back Toby Gerhart has decided to enter the NFL draft.

Gerhart announced today he’s forgoing a fifth year of eligibility and will leave the school immediately to prepare for next month’s NFL combine. Gerhart could have returned for another season because a knee injury limited him to one game in 2007.

Gerhart, a Norco High School graduate, rushed for a school-record 1,871 yards and a nation-leading 28 touchdowns this past season. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy race to Alabama’s Mark Ingram in the closest vote ever. He won the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back and was the Pac-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year.
