Rookie Ryan Dungey readily admits that if he was told two weeks ago he would be the leader in the AMA Supercross standings, he would not have believed it.

James Stewart, the reigning AMA Supercross champion, and Chad Reed, a two-time AMA Supercross champion, were expected to be the top two riders in 2010.

But Stewart is in seventh place after two races. Reed broke his hand in Saturday night’s race at Chase Field in Phoenix and is expected to miss the next six weeks.

Dungey enters Saturday night’s AMA Supercross race at Angel Stadium with a nine-point lead in the standings and as the rider to beat after winning the Phoenix race and finishing second at Angel Stadium to open the season.

‘I don’t think it’s really known for somebody to come out and really start giving them a run,” Dungey said as he prepares for a rainy, muddy race this weekend in Anaheim.
