It’s official -- former Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis is heading back to the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced this morning they’ve hired Weis to be their offensive coordinator.

Weis, who posted a 35-27 career record with the Fighting Irish, will try to turn around a Kansas City team that posted a 4-12 record this season. He will be reunited with Chiefs Coach Todd Haley, who worked with Weis while the two were assistant coaches on the New York Jets in the late 1990s. Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, a former New England Patriots executive, has also worked with Weis in the past.

Despite his shortcomings at Notre Dame, Weis won three Super Bowls in five years as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator (2000-2004).

FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this post incorrectly listed Weis’ career record at Notre Dame as 27-35. It’s 35-27.
