Fast NHRA times at Pomona

Larry Dixon took over the lead in the National Hot Rod Assn. top fuel standings after posting the top time in qualifying on Friday.

Pretty good for a driver who didn’t even make it to the eliminations rounds the last time the NHRA visited Pomona in February.

John Force posted the top time in NHRA funny car qualifying. It was a highlight in what he called the second worst drag racing season of his long career.

Jack Beckman said the funny car race is all but over and he is racing for second place. Robert Hight, a driver for John Force Racing, leads the funny car standings and had the second-fastest car in qualifying on Friday.
