USC tailback Stafon Johnson appeared at a news conference at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and is scheduled to be released from the hospital later today.

Johnson, who is recovering from throat surgery, was accompanied by his mother and the team of physicians that operated on him after a Sept. 28 weightlifting accident.

Johnson, wearing a black USC sweatshirt and a red knit beanie, is making tremendous progress, doctors said, but it is still too early to make definitive statements about when Johnson might regain his ability to speak.

Reading from a statement written by Johnson, his uncle Kregg Anderson said, ‘This is not the end of anything. This is the beginning of things to come.’

Johnson then penned another message read by his mother, Kim Mallory, which ended with ‘Fight on. Beat the Irish.’
