Lava Man is on the comeback trail

Lava Man, the top handicap horse in California during a two-year period this decade, is back in training. The 8-year-old gelding was retired last fall but could return to racing after receiving stem-cell therapy, the Daily Racing Form reported.Lava Man worked out on Wednesday at Hollywood Park and has returned to the barn of trainer Doug O’Neill. Lava Man has $5.2 million in earnings and has won seven Grade I stakes.

In 2006 and 2007, he won both the Hollywood Gold Cup and Santa Anita Handicap.
