Unbeaten heavyweight contender Chris Arreola of Riverside will fight former world heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev, 40, on Oct. 3, Arreola’s agent told The Times on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs) originally was due to land a title shot against Vitali Klitschko in September at Staples Center, but Klitschko instead has opted to fight England’s David Haye.

‘We were at the mercy of the Klitschkos,’ said Arreola’s agent, Jeremiah Donati of Leigh Steinberg‘s firm in Newport Beach. ‘They’ll still have to go through Chris after Maskaev, but it’ll be a good test for Chris.’

The bout probably will be staged at Citizens Business Bank in Ontario or Home Depot Center, Donati said. Another boxing source not authorized to discuss negotiations publicly said junior-middleweight Paul Williams will fight on the card against Sergiy Dzinziruk, although contracts haven’t been signed.

Maskaev won the World Boxing Council title in 2006 with a TKO of Hasim Rahman but surrendered the belt in 2008 when Sam Peter beat him by TKO.

Arreola knocked out another veteran, Jameel McCline, in the fourth round of his most recent fight, in April.
