Ups:

  • Russell Martin. Martin went three for four with a home run, his first of the season. Manager Joe Torre was also pleased with his two singles. ‘I think that was important, not only the home run but after that he was still hitting line drives . . . ‘ Torre said.
  • Ronald Belisario. Belisario pitched 1 2/3innings and allowed one hit, walked one and struck out five batters. He held Chone Figgins on third after he tripled off of starter Jeff Weaver to lead off the sixth inning.

  • Matt Kemp. Kemp was two for three, scored a run and had a nice catch against the center field wall.

  • The Angels bullpen. Kevin Jepsen, Rich Thompson and Rafael Rodriguez allowed no runs and two hits, with one walk and three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Downs:

The bottom third of the Angels lineup. Maicer Izturis, Jeff Mathis and Eric Aybar combined to go 0 for 10 (Gary Matthews Jr., pinch-hitting for Mathis, hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth).

  • Jonathan Broxton. He closed out the game, but allowed one hit (the home run to Matthews), two runs and a walk in one inning of work. Broxton had just come back from sitting out three straight games because of a sore toe.
  • Other notes:

    • Jered Weaver had been 5-0 at home before tonight’s game and had won his last four starts. He had a 1.01 ERA at home. He allowed 10 hits in a game only once before, on April 15 against Seattle, and hadn’t allowed more than four earned runs in a game this season.

    • In the clubhouse before the game, Jered Weaver showed off a Long Beach State football shirt that claimed the program was undefeated since 1991. Neither Jered nor the T-shirt mentioned the fact that Long Beach State hasn’t had a football program since 1991, but Jered and the rest of the locker room got a kick out of it.
