If it wasn’t enough incentive for the UCLA Bruins that CBS analyst Seth Davis picked Virginia Commonwealth to upset the sixth-seeded Bruins or that President Barack Obama particularly singled out UCLA as an upset victim and an example of the weak Pacific 10 Conference, American was leading Villanova, 41-31, at halftime.

Should UCLA beat Virginia Commonwealth in the second game at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia tonight and if 14th-seeded American held on and to upset third-seeded Villanova, UCLA’s path to the Sweet 16 would have become much less likely to be stymied by hometown Philly fans who would say really mean things and cheer really loudly (and maybe even using bad bad words) against UCLA and for Villanova on Saturday. Just saying Ben Howland, things seemed to have been going the Bruins’ way.
