Manti Te’o, the All-American linebacker from Punahou High in Honolulu who was the focus of an intense recruiting battle between USC and UCLA, ended the competition by announcing he had chosen Notre Dame.

That’s right -- the Fighting Irish pulled off a huge recruiting coup.

Te’o had visited USC last weekend. UCLA made a big push behind assistant coach Norm Chow, a Punahou grad.

Te’o, 6 feet 2, 225 pounds, was the Gatorade player of the year in Hawaii. For complete detailed coverage of all of today’s signings, stay tuned to latimes.com/sports.
