TEMPE, Ariz. -- Relievers Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo looked sharp in their Cactus League debuts today, both retiring the side in order in one-inning stints against the Chicago White Sox.

Shields, who will play for the U.S. team in the World Baseball Classic, struck out Jim Thome, got Jermaine Dye to fly to right and Alexei Ramirez to line out. Arredondo struck out two of the three batters he faced.

The Angels took a 3-2 lead in the third inning on a run-scoring double by Hainley Statia and Mike Napoli’s two-run double to left center.

Brandon Wood crushed two fly balls to the outer reaches of Tempe Diablo Stadium and had nothing to show for it.

In the second inning, White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye slammed into the wall to catch Wood’s drive, and in the third inning, center fielder Jerry Owens robbed Wood with a leaping catch at the wall.
