Former NFL Players Inc. executive Doug Allen reportedly is out as the Screen Actors Guild lead negotiator in what’s become a protacted and bitter labor contract negotiation.

The Times’ Richard Verrier reported earlier today that SAG’s board of directors had moved to oust Allen as executive director and chief negotiator. Verrier’s blog post cited ‘a crisis in leadership that has paralyzed Hollywood’s largest actors union.’

A few minutes ago, Variety reported that Allen had advised SAG staffers in an email that he was leaving his post.

Allen joined SAG two years ago following two decades as an executive with Players Inc., the arm of the NFL Players Assn. that handles marketing deals and other business opportunities for union-represented players.

Allen was a close personal friend of Gene Upshaw, the NFLPA’s long-time executive director who died on Aug. 21, 2008.
