Joe Paterno says contract made a difference in recruiting

Penn State Coach Joe Paterno admitted today that his contract status had become an issue when it came to recruiting.

Mark Wogenrich of the Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., reports that the three-year contract renewal Paterno signed before coming to California for the Rose Bowl made a difference after all.

‘[The university] wanted to put something in writing,’ Paterno said. ‘We prolonged the thing until it became a recruiting [hindrance]. Kids wanted to know. We needed a contract. ...’
