Taken aback by a bit of criticism directed its way in the Fabulous Forum, Major League Soccer has hastily pointed out that Alan Rothenberg in fact gave his blessing to the new trophy.

‘The first person we contacted was Alan,’ Commissioner Don Garber said at the time of the unveiling.* ‘Alan was very gracious and agreed with this concept.’

Of course, what else could the 70-year-old Rothenberg say but yes?

The new trophy replaces the Alan I. Rothenberg trophy and will be named the Philip F. Anschutz trophy in honor of the Denver billionaire whose financial backing of the league has been crucial to its development.

The trophy will be presented for the first time on Nov. 23 at the Home Depot Center in Carson at the conclusion of the MLS Cup final.
