Scott Boras talks about Manny Ramirez and Mark Teixeira

Agent Scott Boras, who represents Manny Ramirez and Mark Teixeira, attracted a crowd of reporters Tuesday when he passed through the lobby of the St. Regis Resort Monarch Beach, where baseball’s general managers are meeting.

Here’s some of what he had to say:

-- On the muddled financial markets: ‘The downturn in the economy shouldn’t affect the kind of contracts offered to free agents. I think we have to look at the revenues today, which are historic.’

-- On Ramirez and Teixeira: “We’re not going to be negotiating with as many teams that are interested.”

-- The two months that Teixeira spent with the Angels made him more open to playing anywhere in the country, according to Boras, who knows he represents a hot commodity: ‘Having done this for 30 years, I would say this is one of the more aggressive markets for a player.”

-- On client Derek Lowe, who is a free agent: “He became Bob Gibson-ish where he was throwing the first, fourth and seventh game of a [playoff] series.”

-- On client Jason Varitek: The catcher shouldn’t be downgraded because he hit only .220 in 2008. Boras said that Varitek’s value is as a catcher, and that the Red Sox won 60% of the time he was behind the plate.

Varitek’s age – he’s 36 – also shouldn’t count against him. Boras suggested that the four-year, $52-million contract that Jorge Posada signed with the Yankees last winter could be a benchmark.

Otherwise, it’s been a pretty slow day for reporters. A lot of standing around in the lobby.
