It was like an updated version of Chick Hearn’s memorable phrase on the old Jim Healy radio show: ‘We gotta get off the air.’

Boxing promoter Richard Schaefer had just finished a nearly five-hour meeting with former world champion ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley and his wife, Jin, attempting to craft a January fight with current welterweight champion Antonio Margarito.

‘I’ve got 1,000 people at my door, the Mosleys right in front of me, and a million unread e-mails,’ Schaefer said. ‘I gotta go.’

Although his official line was that there’s ‘nothing to report,’ Schaefer did have just enough time to inform The Times he’s ‘still working’ on the fight. He established what the Mosleys want from the bout, and said he’ll take those directions and ‘go talk to the various people [Top Rank’s Bob Arum and HBO] to see what I can get done. I’m trying to get this fight done.’

With a million e-mails, though, maybe he never will.
