Upfronts: The CW renews ‘Life Unexpected’ and ‘One Tree Hill’ and orders two new dramas

‘One Tree Hill’ fans, you’re going strong.

The CW has picked up the Mark Schwahn-created drama for its eighth season. The network also renewed the freshman ‘Life Unexpected.’
Also coming to The CW next fall are two new series, ‘Nikita,’ and ‘Hellcats.’ In a surprise move, the network opted not to go with Amy Sherman-Palladino’s pilot, ‘The Damn Thorpes.’

‘Nikita’ is the CW’s update of the 1990 film ‘La Femme Nikita’ by Craig Silverstein (‘Bones’ and ‘K-Ville’). In this version, Nikita has gone rogue and a new Nikita is being trained to replace her. The cast includes Maggie Q (‘Mission Impossible 3’), Lyndsy Fonseca (“Kick-Ass,” “Desperate Housewives”), Shane West (“ER,” “Once and Again”), Aaron Stanford (“Traveler,” “X-Men: The Last Stand”), Ashton Holmes (“Boston Legal”),Tiffany Hines (“Bones”), Melinda Clarke (“The O.C.,” “The Vampire Diaries”) and Xander Berkeley (“Kick-Ass,” “24,” “The Mentalist”).

Kate Torgovnick’s book ‘Cheer!’ is the foundation for ‘Hellcats,’ a script by Kevin Murphy (‘Caprica’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’) that is set in the world of competitive cheerleading. It centers on a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is determined to leave Memphis and go to law school. When she loses her scholarship, she tries out for the Hellcats and is accepted. It is produced by Tom Welling of ‘Smallville.’ The cast includes: Aly Michalka (“The Roommate,” “Bandslam”), Ashley Tisdale (“High School Musical”), Heather Hemmens (“CSI: Miami”), Robbie Jones (“One Tree Hill“), Matt Barr (“Harper’s Island”),Sharon Leal (“Dreamgirls,” “Private Practice”),Vanessa Lodge and Gail O’Grady (“NYPD Blue,” “American Dreams”).
