Fresh from collecting an Emmy Award last night for Outstanding Children’s Program, the cast of ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ were greeted with rock-star adulation Sunday at the D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Throngs of screaming, bouncing adolescents (and their parents) repeatedly shouted their affection -- We Love You! -- and held aloft hand-written signs declaring, well, pretty much the same sentiment. That is, when the fans weren’t snapping enough photographs to make the paparazzi jealous.

Young aficionados of the Disney Channel show viewed the new season’s premiere episode and had the chance to pose questions of the Disney Channel’s stars, Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone and Maria Canals-Barrera.

During the question-and-answer session, several tween girls came to the microphone to make nearly identical requests of Henrie: ‘Can I have a hug?’ It’s a request he graciously accepted, along with small tokens of affection, including a ‘crush bracelet.’ One fan even took the stage, dropped to one knee and proposed marriage.

When asked what it felt like to receive the award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, executive producer Peter Murietta led the group through a reenactment, in which the entire cast jumped up and down, arms raised.

The only member of the show who was absent was David DeLuise, son of the late Dom DeLuise and actress Carol Arthur, who broke his collarbone when attempting a flying somersault as he entered the stage. He had to be taken to the emergency room (in a limo).
