As cable news remained trained this afternoon on the motorcade carrying Sen. Edward Kennedy’s body to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum in Boston, the networks scrambled to get staff in place for two more days of coverage focused on the death of the longtime legislator.

Fox News, CNN and MSNBC all announced plans for live coverage of Kennedy’s memorial service, which will be held Friday evening at the JFK Library in Boston, as well as his funeral Mass at Boston’s The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Saturday morning and burial at Arlington National Cemetery Saturday afternoon.

It remains unclear whether the broadcast networks will break into prime-time programming Friday night to cover Kennedy’s memorial service, but ABC and CBS plan to carry the funeral Mass live Saturday morning. PBS’ ‘The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer’ will not produce special coverage Saturday, but will include reports about Friday’s memorial service in a special edition for West Coast viewers.

[Updated at 8:10 a.m., Aug 28: NBC will provide live coverage of Kennedy’s funeral and burial at Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday. ABC also plans to cover both events live, while CBS will carry the Mass in the morning.
