The mood at CBS is light and buoyant, reflecting that of the enormous and energetic crowd.

‘It’s very rare, I think, gentlemen,’ said Katie Couric, ‘to see this many people in this good a mood.’

‘The star of this show is the wide shot,’ said Bob Schieffer.

Couric’s word of the morning is ‘fun,’ as when, regarding the world and national leaders mingling upon the dias, she remarked, ‘It really is fun to see these very powerful people past and present just socializing, isn’t it?’ And, noting a shot of the moving van backed up against the White House, she said, ‘It would fun to be there.’

‘We’re going to be enjoying it,’ Couric said of the ceremony, about to start.

Though in possession of Obama’s speech, Schieffer was not going to peek: ‘I’ve got it, but I don’t want to read it. I want to hear him give it.’
