A lot of people are buying handguns these days, and new or prospective gun owners are encouraged to attend a safety class and obtain a Department of Justice certificate.

Southern California residents can attend such a class Saturday at Raahauge's Shooting Enterprises in Corona. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $125, which includes a DOJ certificate issued upon passing a written test. Handguns are available for those who don't yet have one.

The course includes basic operational skills for revolvers and semiautomatic pistols, and teaches National Rifle Assn. rules for safe handling in a variety of shooting positions. For details, phone Mike Browne, chief instructor, at (949) 637-5534.
