U.S. women’s foil team upsets Germany to advance to semifinals

The U.S. women’s foil team of Erinn Smart of Brooklyn, N.Y., Hanna Thompson of Rochester, N.Y., and Emily Cross of New York City pulled out a 31-30 upset of reigning world champion Poland in the quarterfinals of Saturday’s competition. The American team was seeded seventh, while Poland was seeded No. 2.

The U.S. next plays No. 3-seeded Hungary.
