Don’t forget: Daylight saving time ends this weekend

Here’s another reason to celebrate as you look ahead to Saturday night and the rest of your weekend: Daylight saving time ends.

That’s right, you get an extra hour of shut-eye this weekend.

Technically, the change occurs at 2 a.m. Sunday. But if you’re like the rest of us, you’ll push the clocks back one hour before you go to sleep Saturday night. (Remember: ‘Spring forward, fall back.’)

The switcheroo began as part of the nation’s efforts to save energy, although some critics say it’s a hassle that doesn’t end up saving that much power.

Moreover, not everyone in the U.S. recognizes this twice annual ritual, notes the California Energy Commission: Daylight saving time is not observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or most of Arizona. (The Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona recognizes it.)

Whenever you change the clocks, remember to take a moment to change all the clocks and watches in one fell swoop. That includes your alarm clock, of course, but also the microwave clock. Your dress watch. Your sports watch. The clock on the stove. And especially the one in your car. Unless, of course, you don’t mind spending the next several days mistakenly showing up 60 minutes early.

It can’t hurt to also eyeball your cellphone and computer to make sure they’ve updated as well. ‘Cause sometime, as Apple well knows, things go buggy.

And for those of you who will be hitting Saturday night’s happy hour and beyond, here’s a bit of knowledge you can drop on your barfly friends: It’s daylight saving time -- no ‘s’ at the end of ‘saving’ -- even though everyone says it that way.
