A New Mexico teen has come forward with an eerie claim: He says he’s Robbie Romero, who was last seen as a 7-year-old in June 2000. At the time of his disappearance, Robbie had been walking home from school in the Santa Fe area with a friend.

The Santa Fe Police Department has scheduled a news conference this afternoon to announce the results of DNA tests that could clear up the mystery.

The disappearance of Robbie Romero gripped New Mexico in 2000. The FBI became involved in the search for the little boy, and at one point authorities dug up the family’s backyard in a search for evidence.

On Wednesday, a 19-year-old who goes by the name Robert Terrezas came forward and said he was the missing boy. Terrezas’ mother insists that his claim isn’t true, and that she has proof the teenager was born in Mexico and later came to the United States.

Romero’s mother, who has met with the teenager, told the local media that she’s not so sure. She said she is anxiously awaiting the results of the DNA tests.
