Manny Ramirez faces domestic abuse charges in Florida

Former Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez was arrested in Florida on Monday night on suspicion of battering his wife during an argument.

Ramirez, 39, has denied hitting his wife as they quarreled at their Weston, Fla., home. She told authorities that he slapped her, causing her head to strike a bedroom headboard, according to a copy of the police report obtained by the Associated Press.

The former World Series MVP appeared in court and was ordered by Broward County Circuit Judge Jon Hurley to stay away from his wife, Juliana. Bail was set at $2,500 and it was not immediately clear when it would be posted or when Ramirez would be released. WSVN-TV captured his court apperance.

The eccentric Ramirez was released by the Dodgers earlier this year; he then signed a one-year, $2-million contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. But the outfielder retired in April rather than face a 100-game suspension after he tested positive a second time for a performance-enhancing substance.
