BMI is set to launch a new concert showcase series later this month, the performing rights organization announced Wednesday.

Dubbed On the Verge, the series is part of its ongoing BMI Live initiative, which pairs the organization with songwriters and venues, allowing participating BMI performers and publishers to collect royalties for reported live performances.

The first installment of BMI Live Presents: On the Verge is Jan. 17 at the Viper Room. The inaugural show will feature singer-songwriter Lemmo, Bay Area indie pop outfit Finish Ticket, Silverlake’s the New Limb and California Institute of the Arts alumni Rimpau.

‘[BMI’s concert series] has a significance because of the initiative BMI has taken to recognize, identify and compensate performing songwriters whose life blood is touring and playing small venues and clubs across the country,’ Barbara Cane, vice president and general manager of writer/publisher relations for BMI’s L.A. office, wrote in an e-mail. ‘BMI is committed to helping songwriters get paid for the performance of their music in these establishments which support and provide a vital and fertile stage for the voice of these stars of tomorrow.’

On the Verge, much like BMI’s urban music showcase Next Fresh Thing, will happen quarterly.

Tickets and more information for the 21+ show can be found on the Viper Room’s website.
