Pop & Hiss premiere: Non Projects label offers new mixtape

Since Stockhausen and the Musique Concrete heyday, it’s been cliché to compare electronic musicians to classical composers, but the delineations are particularly blurred in the case of the artists on the Non Projects imprint.
Founded by former Alpha Pup intern Brian Simon (who records as Anenon), the label has significantly raised its profile over the last 12 months, releasing a steady stream of gorgeous fractured music with a firm footprint in beat music, but with an exploratory spirit that encompasses classical, jazz, rock, hip-hop and folk.
Armed with pianos, saxophones, guitars, harps and Ableton, most of the label’s flagship artists (Anenon, Ana Caravelle, Ryan York/Asura, Rarebit and ROM-DOS) will be taking over the Bootleg Theater on Saturday night. In advance of the event, Simon/Anenon composed a mix that illustrates why the label is one of the most promising to emerge from L.A. in recent years.
Largely composed of songs from Non Projects artists, the mix also includes remixes from fellow beat-heads Devonwho and the Ghostly-signed Shigeto. But what really separates the NP artists from their peers is their dedication to letting seemingly diffuse sounds clash. Ectoplasmic wails bleed into crackling drums and narcotic synths. Forest nymph harps and weightless voices, all buoyed by hypnotic beats. This is probably the best new thing you will hear today. Download and track listing below.
