Appearing at the MTV Video Music Awards isn’t a violation of Chris Brown’s probation for pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna, and the artist certainly isn’t going for sympathy votes. He ascended to the heavens while dancing to a smash-up of songs that included his “Beautiful People” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

It’s as if Brown wants to anger his critics, declaring some sort of ownership and inspiration from artists as diverse as Nirvana and Wu-Tang Clan while being flown over the crowd as if he’s some pop-star angel. He inspired a standing-o from Kanye West and a fist-pump from Justin Bieber. This despite the fact that Brown never cracked a smile, and stomped off stage like a bitter child.

Moments later Lady Gaga, again in character as Joe (Jo?) Calderone, lauded accolade upon accolade upon Britney Spears, who was treated to a tribute of past hits. Not a year goes by without the MTV VMAs finding some reason to trot out Spears, so expect this to be one of many tributes to come. Spears didn’t take the stage to dance, as a cast of trained dancers does Spears better than Spears.
