Our sister blog LA Now is reporting that rapper T.I. and his wife, Tameka ‘Tiny’ Cottle, were arrested late Wednesday on drug possession charges after sheriff’s deputies smelled marijuana coming from their Maybach during a traffic stop.

‘A narcotics investigation ensued,’ during which T.I. and his wife ‘were found to be in possession of a controlled substance,’ according to a statement from L.A. County sheriff’s officials.

KTLA News is reporting that both were arrested for possession of methamphetamines, although other reports are citing marijuana. LA Now reports that they were arrested for having “pills resembling Ecstasy” that deputies found in their vehicle after pulling them over for making an illegal U-turn, said Nicole Nishida, a spokeswoman for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. “The pills are being tested as we speak,” she said.

The 29-year-old Grammy-winning rapper behind songs such as ‘Whatever You Like,’ whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., served seven months in an Arkansas federal prison and three months in a Georgia halfway house on federal weapons charges stemming from his arrest three years ago. He was released in March.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, T.I. is heading back to Atlanta in the next 24 hours and may be ordered to to face the federal judge who signed off on a merciful deal that shaved years off a potential prison term. T.I.’s probation expires in 2013.

Cottle, 36, was a singer with the ‘90s girl group Xscape.

Both were booked at the West Hollywood sheriff’s station and were later released on $10,000 bail each.
