Pavement adds pre-Coachella gig

March 25, 2010 |  1:21 pm

Perhaps there is a benefit to Goldenvoice doing away with single-day Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival tickets. More so than ever it appears that artists are playing pre-festival dates, providing an option to those who don't want to drop $300-plus on a weekend in the desert. Add reunited indie rock act Pavement to the list of artists with Coachella warm-up gigs.

Pavement split not too long after appearing at the first-ever Coachella in 1999, and the alt-rock-era act is on a victory lap tour this spring/summer. The act will play the Fox Theatre in Pomona on April 15, on the eve of Coachella. Tickets go on sale March 27 at 10 a.m., and will run $41, not including various Ticketmaster surcharges.

There are rumblings of a summer Pavement gig as well, perhaps even at the Hollywood Bowl, but details remain sketchy at the moment. (Note, however, that the band is scheduled to play UC Berkeley's Greek Theatre on June 25, and probably wouldn't schedule a lone West Coast date.) Pop & Hiss has also heard rumors of a late-summer Spoon gig, perhaps at the Greek, but again, nothing is confirmed. Let us stress -- nothing is confirmed. In the weeks after Coachella, however, expect a flurry of announcements pertaining to acts that performed at the fest.

Pavement is the latest in a long line of 2010 Coachella acts performing in the Southland ahead of Coachella. Tonight, Zooey Deschanel's vintage pop duo She & Him will appear at the El Rey. Jay-Z visits Staples Center on Friday night, Public Image Limited hits Club Nokia on April 13 and the Specials play the venue on April 15.
