Coachella preview: Glass Candy

April 2, 2009 |  9:00 am

Pop & Hiss will be covering the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., from April 17 to 19. There are more than 120 acts on the bill, but in the next couple of weeks, we'll be selecting some of the best bets -- some on the radar, some flying below.

Who: Glass Candy

Why you should wear your thickest lip gloss and your darkest shades while dancing to them: This Portland, Ore., duo has style cred from every angle. Singer Ida No and production wizard Johnny Jewel have been played on the Chloe and Chanel runways. Their label, Italians Do It Better, founded by Jewel and DJ Mike Simonetti, hosts some of the most intriguing bands of late, including local analog chanteuses Nite Jewel. We expect them to burn up the dance tent with shiny cuts from their 2007 disaffected disco breakthrough, "B/E/A/T/B/O/X." Also, look out for "Miss Broadway," Glass Candy's cover of the 1977 Belle Epoque tune. "We really love playing ‘Miss Broadway,' " Jewel told L.A. Record in an interview last year. "It’s such a wild song. People just go crazy and get loose on that one."
