Terry Gilliam screens ‘Brazil’: Kenneth Turan’s film pick

The opportunity to see ‘Brazil’ on a big screen would be event enough, but the chance to see it followed by a discussion with director Terry Gilliam is a chance not to be missed.
Nearly unreleased, Gilliam’s exceptional 1985 film — a look at a future world where entanglements with government bureaucracy are crushing— was the surprise winner of the best picture of the year nod from the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. Stars include Jonathan Pryce, Michael Palin, Kim Greist and Robert De Niro.
When the film was released, I called it ‘the most potent piece of satiric political cinema since ‘Dr. Strangelove,’ ‘ and I haven’t changed my mind.
Playing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the American Cinematheque at the Aero Theater, 1328 Montana Ave., Santa Monica.
