'Hunger Games' update: Primrose Everdeen character cast

April 20, 2011 | 12:41 pm

Willow Katniss Everdeen now has a sister. Lionsgate announced Wednesday that New Mexico native Willow Shields will play Primrose Everdeen in "The Hunger Games" for director Gary Ross. It'll be her debut film performance.

Said Ross of the casting: "It's so exciting to find an amazing young actress like the one we just met. Prim is an emotionally demanding role and in many ways she is the cornerstone of the story. Willow Shields will make an amazing Prim and we're lucky to have her."

Prim is the younger sister of Katniss. In the first novel of Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" trilogy, she is initially chosen for the annual games but Katniss steps in to take her place, protecting her beloved sister from the brutal killing games.

"The Hunger Games" will open next March. Production on the highly anticipated film begins shortly.
