'The Hunger Games': Is Jennifer Lawrence the new Katniss?

March 14, 2011 |  1:51 pm

Lawrence1 The rumor mill was running on overdrive over the weekend regarding Jennifer Lawrence and "The Hunger Games."  The 20-year-old actress, who spent much of 2010 in the spotlight due to her star-turning role in "Winter's Bone," is definitely the front-runner for the highly coveted role of Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of the uber-popular dystopian series by Suzanne Collins.

But the actress has yet to be offered the part.

Lionsgate, the studio behind the publishing sensation that may have just enough romance, danger and high-concept adventure to dethrone "Twilight" from its perch as the "it" phenomenon, is being very careful as they make their selection for the lead part. And they are not talking. People with knowledge of the casting process who spoke on condition of anonymity tell us that Lawrence is loved by a few key executives at the studio but due to the importance of the property, Lionsgate wants to conduct a few more tests of the actresses in contention before making an offer.

(Hailee Steinfeld, the 14-year-old actress who also won acclaim last year with her performance in "True Grit," is up for the role too, but there may be concern that she is too young to actually pull off the  adventuresome huntress.)

There's no denying part of Katniss is  compelling. The 16-year-old is a brave protagonist and caretaker of her family. She volunteers for the Hunger Games, an annual event where children between the ages of 12 and 18 fight each other to the death, after her younger sister is first chosen to compete. The story features a compelling love triangle but shares little else with the "Twilight" franchise.

Gary Ross ("Seabiscuit") has been hired to direct what could be a trilogy, should the first film connect with audiences. The studio hopes to begin production shortly with a release date already set for March 23, 2012.

Pelase, no. Love her but she's not Katniss

I would love to play Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games movie. Really would! What do you think?

just doesnt look right. but if was between her and those 14 year olds, shes it all the way

I submitted for the role as well, not too long ago. About a month? Either way, I have not heard back which is upsetting, but for the sake of the readers, don't put Lawrence as her! Even Hailee would be a better fit I think-- and I don't like that choice either! Haha, I do love the idea of some other girls as Katniss, but I've been told many times over I'm pretty well the embodiment of Katniss, and I'm dying in suspense since submitting. I realize my chances of even remotely hearing back are 1/1 000 000 but I'm still keeping hope alive that they might notice this small girl who has immense potential and raw passion. I'm trying to get my acting career started but the business is hard as a rock!

Jeez, I mean, I do archery too, it's such a perfect role!

If you guys want to help me at all, (and it's okay if you don't!), please follow me on my twitter @Thesamsteeves and/or like my page on facebook (Linked by my name).

Thanks so much for reading all of this, haha-- if anyone did!

Ftww, nooo not Jennifer Lawrence this is KIDS FIGHTING 12-18 ! Not Non Kids !! Ughh . HAILEE FOR KATNISS ! ..

NO she is not katniss

No no no non noooooooo....

There's no denying she is a great actress. But HOW can she grow with the franchise when she's already grown? lol! if she was 17 or 18 right now, then totally believable. But there HAS TO BE a certain kind of innocence with the actress and honestly, JL doesn't look innocent at all. Even when she's acting. The TRUE age of the actress does play a big part in this series because she must grow with the series just as the actors from Harry Potter and Twilight did.

Plus casting someone older will take the seriousness of what these kids must grow through. At least that's what I believe.

She's great but not for this part...

I'm sorry, but I dont think of this girl as Katniss. I think if they cast this girl for the part that I would mess up the movie. ( no offence to Jennifer ) I think they should use Hailee Steinfeld. She would be almost perfect for the part of Katniss. You can always make her look older.

I won't see it if she's in it. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Jennifer would be a BRILLIANT decision, as stated above..Katniss's role is no walk in the park, not only does the actress have to portray a ruthless fire but has to be put a lot of emotion and depth into the role...the series get's all the more intense with each book, so yes...the most important factor is the acting ability...which Jennifer show's the most capability of.

Jennifer's pretty, but I don't really see Katniss in her. Maybe she could be Johanna instead.

No. She looks too old for Katniss. Besides, one of the things that struck me about The Hunger Games is how CHILDREN were affected by wars. I think Hailee Steinfeld is perfect for the role. She looks young, is young and can really show how people her age who are in wars experience difficulties. Also, she handled True Grit. How can she not handle The Hunger Games?

I haven't seen "Winter's Bone", but I HAVE seen the trailer for "Hanna". Soairse Ronan would be better, I think (Go watch the trailer for "Hanna" on youtube if you don't believe me. The brutality and vulnerability are both there in spades). But since JL is 20, there are no restrictions on how many hours she can work, so they may be factoring that in. As for how she looks, well, whatever. That's what makeup artists and hair dye are for. Katniss never says that she's beautiful, but she's the narrator, and she's a tomboy who's focused on feeding her family. Why would she say, "I'm gorgeous, by the way"? That's definitely not something Katniss would even be aware of. What she does say is that her mother and Prim are both beautiful. Genetically speaking, the odds are that she's decent-looking too. If JL can play the part well- which is what matters to me- then her looks are not a big deal. But I still think Soairse Ronan would be better. Seriously, watch that "Hanna" trailer.

Please NO on Jennifer as Katniss dont get me wrong shes a great actress but just doesnt fit Katniss's description
SAOIRSE RONAN should be Katniss she'd be great

Guys, she's only 20. Whereas, Hailee Steinfeld is 14. It'd be way too awkward watching Steinfeld make out with Peeta on camera. And if Lawrence is cast, Chloe Moretz would be perfect for Prim.

I say if they pick her, it'll be because she's got an amazing connection to the character and a really ability to portray her.
I'd rather they do that than pick a mediocre to reasonably good actress that looks just like the character.
I say if they're so excited about Lawrence, there's quite possibly a truly awesome reason why.

OHH , OHH ! i KNOWW ! , See, so Hailee Steinfeld as Katniss and Callan McAuliffe as Peeta ! So it wont look wrong like Hailee is kissing some old dude Since Callan is Like 16 :DD And Gale ? Uhh he should be played by Logan Lerman Even though he's old he wont have alot of kissing scenes with Katniss ?? I feel so stupid right now for typing what i think ... But anyways Yeeaah ...

No way. She did amazing in winters bone but she is far from being katniss. Obviously she can act and they could transform her appearance but she looks far too old to play katniss. And I personally don't understand why people keep saying that hailee Steinfeld is too young she is closer to the characters actual age than Jennifer is. I really hope they can pull this off but please don't choose her.

I think she could do it. Not my first choice but better then all these little girls trying to get the part.

I think an unknown would be better for the roll, with the proper Katniss like similarities.

I guess a dark skin actress was not good enough for you. You had to make the hero of this trilogy in your own image. It is so typical. Another racist Hollywood film. I guess an olive skinned, dark haired, skinny girl with small breasts was not good enough. These pinheads in Hollywood must realize that the book found a fan base with a dark skinned hero on board. Any of you guys who have read the book must know that she was dark haired and hairy (they have a difficult time waxing her body hair to prepare her for the games). Just like Hollywood. Racist, racist, racist. In the old days white people played Indians, Blacks, Asian, etc. What are they gonna do? Put dark paint on her, make her shed thirty pounds, give her a dark haired wig, and give her dark contact lenses? Change her into someone entirely different?
How fake.
(Again, Lionsgates in case you did not get it: Katniss is dark, hairy, poor, hungry, tough, and totally underprivileged.)
This is wrong. The casting is screwed up.
Let this one go down like the "300", with all of their racist stereotypes, or Prince of Persia with not even one Persian in it. Or The Last Air Bender where all the Asian roles went to Indians and whites. Lionsgates you really screwed this up. You took a great trilogy and turned it into another lame, racist Hollywood film.

So, let me get this. A sexy, voluptuous , blond woman plays an ethnic, brown skinned, hungry, skinny child. Wow, is that lame or what? I would say that is racist at best. Just cast the real character. Why is Hollywood such a racist industry? This is bad. They need to do a better job.

she better dye her hair brown

Oh, sorry. I didn't realize Katniss was the new Barbie. Hey, Barbie, where's Skipper? LoL!!! Plus, she's BLONDE, and an OLD LADY! Please, no. PLEASE, don't let her be Katniss, this is so STUPID! Make Kaya Scodelario play Katniss, she's actually the right age. Way to ruin my favorite book! Hollywood ruins everything! ( JEREMY SUMPTER FOR PEETA! )
