British actor Michael York made his film debut in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1967 ‘Taming of the Shrew’ opposite Elizabeth Taylor. He credits Taylor with giving him his Hollywood beginning.

Wrote York, ‘Elizabeth will always have a special place in my heart as she gave me my start in movies. As a producer as well as luminous star, she approved my casting in ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ She was generous and encouraging and at the end of filming gave me a silver framed photo inscribed ‘Dear Michael, You will tread greater boards than these. If not, we want to know why.’

‘In a way, I have been trying to justify her crucial faith in me ever since.

‘The firmament of stars is significantly less bright tonight.’
