Long-tailed blue people and flying aerialists?

‘Avatar’ director James Cameron is teaming up with Cirque du Soleil, the juggernaut Canadian performance company, for a new set of 3-D movies.

‘Shrek’ director Andrew Adamson and the company Reel FX will also be involved, overseeing films that are expected to feature acts and performers from Cirque du Soleil’s many live shows.

‘The images we’ve been shooting are stunning, and I know Andrew Adamson will weave them into a transporting, dreamlike narrative which will mesmerize audiences of all ages around the world,” Cameron said in a statement.

Three-D movies centering on live events -- concert films and the like -- haven’t always succeeded as movie theater experiences. And Cameron has a knack for staging spectacles that audiences will pay to see in a movie theater. More details Friday.
