‘The Human Centipede’ adds another leg

Given how many people turned out to see ‘The Human Centipede’ -- the movie grossed $181,000 in the U.S., a number only slightly larger than the amount of peeved articles about the horror film -- you wouldn’t think it a natural for a sequel.
But director Tom Six is shooting one (it’s subtitled ‘Full Sequence,’ after the ‘First Sequence’ of the original) and IFC said this morning it will release the movie, just as it did the first film. The distributor has maintained that the original did well in on-demand orders -- you may not want to go out and see it in a theater but you definitely want to invite it into your home -- so perhaps it’s a bigger phenomenon than we realized.
The premise of the shock-horror original -- deranged scientist sews victims together head-to-posterior in the ‘sequence’ of the subtitle -- provoked a lot of handwringing, although many critics also said the movie didn’t satisfy even on shock-value terms.
Still, you have to give credit to IFC for keeping the grindhouse alive while simultaneously continuing to immerse itself in awards-worthy fare like ‘Carlos.’ As a press release says about the new plotline: ‘The only information IFC Films and the producers are revealing is that this time there is a new villain on the scene named Martin, and that the premise is 100% medically inaccurate!’
