Sony Pictures is showing mothers the love.

The Culver City studio has landed rights to “Mommy & Me,” the A-list package that had been sought by nearly every major studio in town. As we wrote several weeks ago, Meryl Streep and Tina Fey will play a mother and daughter, respectively, in the dramatic comedy, with Stanley Tucci directing the pair and possibly costarring.

It’s still very early in the evolution of this one -- there isn’t even a script, and the studio/producers have to find the right writers to take it on. But with Sony making some serious inroads in the upscale female film market -- look for “Eat Pray Love” to continue the trend next month -- expect this one to be a priority.

It’s also nice to see some adult fare getting some traction. It’s been happening at a niche level for the past few months, with “Winter’s Bone” and “The Kids Are All Right” racking up some respectable specialty business. But landing this one -- with Tucci, who directed “Big Night,” and Streep, who starred with him in smarter entertainments like “Julie & Julia” -- offers some hope in a world of explodables and pyrotechnics. And if nothing else, we’ll get to see Tina Fey act like Meryl Streep’s daughter.
